A major part of our 2006 business plan has been to develop a compliance toolset that brings real benefit to organisations; measurable benefit.

In the past we have focused our efforts on identifying risk in organisations arising from the use (or misues) of personal data.  Whilst we still have a very active audit diary, we are now in a position to offer clients a solution to the problems we identify!

The application of technology to deliver a compliance solution has been our major goal for 2006.  To help us deliver these solutions we have partnered with a number of technology partners.  Our new website (including new look 'n feel) enables us to deliver theirs' and our content more effectively.

Merrill Lynch tells 20 staff to 'stay away' for e-mailing porn

More than 20 staff at the Dublin centre of US financial management and advice group Merrill Lynch have been told to "stay away from work" after being caught sending pornographic material by e-mail.

Although Merrill Lynch have limited any information regarding the activities of their staff, it's clear that their 'inapprpriate use' of email systems was serious enough to warrant a full investigation by the Company.

A Merrill Lynch spokesperson said, "We want to create the right environment for our employees and do not condone inappropriate use of the firm's systems."

Importantly, the Irish Times article goes on to look at some of the actions you can take to protect your organisation and quotes Karyn Harty, a Defamation Partner from law firm McCann FitzGerald.

Her firm advised employers to ensure they had a policy on internet and e-mail usage "which is updated regularly. It is not enough to have it there - you must also regularly remind the staff of the policy."

She goes on to say that, "employers should make efforts to screen out such material and should have a support system in place for employees who suffer distress after receiving objectionable material by e-mail."
